Sheffield Wednesday’s pursuit of a new striker took an interesting twist on Wednesday afternoon with The Sun’s Alan Nixon providing a fresh update.
What’s he said?
The Owls are reportedly still in for Crystal Palace forward Connor Wickham, but they now face the challenge of league rivals Cardiff City who have tabled a better offer.
Neil Harris’ side will also take a look at Jordan Rhodes should their attempt for the Eagles man falter, and their bid would be higher than the £500k Wigan have offered in the past week.
Ultimately, the final decision comes down on Wickham himself, and if he selects the south Yorkshire outfit, it could set things in motion.
Nixon tweeted:
Striker saga
Less than two days are remaining in the transfer window, and all the Owls currently have to show for it is the signings of two unknown wingers – Manuel Hidalgo and Alessio Da Cruz.
It means that manager Garry Monk is still yet to receive his wish of bringing in a new striker, something he wanted to happen ‘as soon as possible’ several weeks ago.

Now there’s a new twist in the tale as it is undoubtedly set to go right down to the wire.
The Owls have to battle Cardiff for what appears to be one of their primary targets, the Daily Mail claimed earlier in the month that he was set to sign on loan, but it has all been a tad quiet since then.
You’d imagine in a perfect world it will be one in, one out and Wickham linking up at Hillsborough would certainly open the door for Rhodes to go to Wales to fill their pressing need.
Calling all FA Cup experts: Name the season these historic giant-killings took place…
One thing that is for sure though, Monk needs to fill the void left behind by 12-goal top scorer Steven Fletcher, they will live rather precariously if not as no other player has scored more than three this season.
And in other news, Sheffield Wednesday fans react to Dom Howson’s latest transfer revelation…
